33 - Bronchiolitis

چکیده
Bronchiolitis, a disease primarily of the first 2 years of life charac terized by signs and symptoms of obstructive airway disease, is caused most commonly by viruses. Approximately 2% to 3% of infants in the first 12 months of life are hospitalized with bron chiolitis, accounting for approximately 125,000 hospitalizations and 200 to 500 deaths annually in the United States. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that the number of yearly hospital admissions attributable to bronchiolitis increased more than twofold between 1980 and 1996. Increasing survival rates for premature infants as well as infants with compromised cardiac, pulmonary, and immune status increase the number of children at risk for severe bronchiolitis.

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin, IL-33, and periostin in hospitalized infants with viral bronchiolitis
Much attention has recently been focused on thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), IL-33, and periostin in allergic disease, but less is known about their role in viral bronchiolitis. The aim of the study was to investigate whether infants exhibit enhanced nasal airway secretion of TSLP, IL-33, and periostin during natural respiratory viral bronchiolitis compared to healthy controls. In total, 213 ...
متن کاملHospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis in preterm infants at <33 weeks gestation without bronchopulmonary dysplasia: the CASTOR study
This study was conducted during the 2008-2009 respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season in France to compare hospitalization rates for bronchiolitis (RSV-confirmed and all types) between very preterm infants (<33 weeks' gestational age, WGA) without bronchopulmonary dysplasia and full-term infants (39-41 WGA) matched for date of birth, gender and birth location, and to evaluate the country-speci...
متن کاملRisk factors for bronchiolitis hospitalization during the first year of life in a multicenter Italian birth cohort
BACKGROUND Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the main causes of respiratory infections during the first year of life. Very premature infants may contract more severe diseases and 'late preterm infants' may also be more susceptible to the infection. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk factors for hospitalization during the first year of life in children born at different gest...
متن کاملCreola bodies in infancy with respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis predict the development of asthma.
BACKGROUND Creola bodies (CrBs) in the sputum are an indicator of respiratory epithelial damage and appear specifically in bronchial asthma. We studied the presence and clinical significance of CrBs in infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis contributing to the development of asthma. METHODS Aspirated sputum samples were collected from 33 infants admitted with acute RSV b...
متن کاملClinical Predictors of Hospital Admission in Children Aged 0-24 Months with Acute Bronchiolitis
BACKGROUND Bronchiolitis is a significant cause of acute morbidity in children less than 2 years old and some children with bronchiolitis are admitted to the hospital. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To identify clinical predictors of hospital admission in children aged 0-24 months with acute bronchiolitis. METHODS: All children in the age group of 0-24 months presenting with acute bronchiolitis to a ded...
